Kitchen pendant lights can serve as part of ambient lighting or task lighting in different situations. No matter how you use these lights, they play an integral role in your interior décor, so you have to choose them wisely. Apart from choosing the right color rendering and temperature, you also have to decide the height and placement. The design and style of your pendant lights influences these choices.

When choosing the kitchen pendant lights you should consider the following variables:

Choose the size of the pendant light in relation with the size of the room and the architectural design of your house. If you have a large room and a large round dining table, we suggest you go for the good old fashioned formula of one large pendant light. If you wish to use smaller pendant lights, make sure you repeat the element thrice or more if necessary.

If you wish to place the light near the entry way to your kitchen, you may go with a large light for ambience and several smaller pendants for task lighting. Make sure you consider all possibilities regarding size, before you make your final choice.

Height and Cord Length

The cord length should be 6’- 9’ (1.8 – 2.7 meters), and the height should be at least 30” (76 cm) above the counter. If you are placing the pendant lights at an entry way, make sure it is well above the height of the tallest person in your house.

The cord length we have recommended is a bit higher than what most interior decorators would advise, but it allows you the freedom to hang your lights lower if you have high ceilings.

LED or Traditional?

Choosing between a traditional light and an LED is a no brainer if you are concerned about the environment. LED lights are one of the most energy efficient solutions in the market, and usually have a soft and cool color. However, some people prefer the power and intense illumination that can only be found in traditional lighting. We suggest you try different varieties of LED light bulbs and make it a priority to use these energy efficient lights.

Plug-In or Hard Wire?

When it comes to the choice between plug-in or hard wire pendant lights, it is highly influenced by your priorities and long term plans. Do you plan to remove the pendant lights from your current location in the next couple of years? Will hardwiring cost you a lot more than you can afford?

While hard wiring is a permanent and durable solution, it requires a lot of time, effort, and money unless the whole setup is already there and you just have to place the pendant lights. If you are renovating your kitchen and do not wish to go through the time consuming and tedious task of hard wiring, simple go for a plug-in pendant light. It will require a longer cord (and may be an extension cord), but it is an easier solution.
